Yoga, a Relief for Modern Day Stresses

As a 3,000-year-old Hindu discipline of mind and body, today yoga is no longer regarded as a mystic practice.

Its core principle is the united body, mind, spirit and truth. It has been accepted by the Western society since the 60s and early 70s, but it was in the 80s that yoga started to be considered as one of most effective methods for stress management.

Though there are also beneficial practices of stretching and toning in yoga, what makes it popular is mostly because it offers an alternative way to handle stress and diffuse tension. Those who used to exercise to relief stress can try to practice yoga and enjoy its meditative quality.

Yoga can also be learnt by anyone, regardless of the age. It works well both on adults and children. Quarrelling children, if asked to stop awhile and raise their arms above their head, lean forward and inhale a deep breath, will diffuse their anger. Yoga definitely helps them cooling down. That is in fact the most beneficial quality of yoga; one thing the stressful Western society eager to enjoy.

Yoga diversity is countless. It has so many types that one willing to master them all may spend the rest of his life.

Hatha Yoga wins huge popularity in the West. Its main principle is the practice of postures to stretch and strengthen the body. Practicing it will help you develop a sense of balance and flexibility, body awareness and mental concentration. It also comes with the relaxation breathing techniques to rest the mind from its endless disturbing chatter, to experience calm inside the self, and to energize and purify the body.

Raja Yoga is also increasingly popular in the West. Its meditation practice is considered better than exercise as a stress reliever, one thing definitely needed by Western society nowadays. While Krya Yoga (yoga of cleansing) and Mantra Yoga (yoga of chanting) as expected are not as popular as Raja Yoga.

Yoga is now used to help the alcoholics, hyperactive children and teenagers with learning disabilities. It develops into a commercial commodity; professional helpers, nursing homes and senior care centers practicing it emerge.
