There are a lot of misconceptions about Yoga existing in people’s mind.
Let us go through some of them.
- People expect Yoga practitioners to be really acrobatic so as to participate in it. This is true about certain extreme Yoga positions. But there are many asanas (postures) suitable for people who are not that flexible too. Your teacher would be able to suggest you the right asanas to suit your personal needs.
- Athletic people mistake it for a competitive sporting activity. This is not the case. Even if you are athletic, if you try to prove a thing or two with other yoga practitioners, you are bound to feel sorry for yourself. You may be risking physical injuries as well.
- Yoga is a religion. It has originated in Hinduism and Buddhism. But Yoga is not a religion of its own. If you start Yoga like joining a new religion, you are mistaken. If you stay away from Yoga for fear that it is a different religion, you are losing the amazing chance to rejuvenate your body and stay healthier for the longest possible duration.
- Yoga is not for men. A major chunk of Yoga practitioners are women. This is especially true in the western world. So some men are bound to look at Yoga as some thing unmanly. But this is not at all true as men and women can benefit from Yoga and its amazing benefits for your body and mind.
- Yoga is a group activity and every one in the group should practice the same asanas at any given time. This is not at all true and the personal requirements of people change from one person to the other. One asana may be right for one person but may not be right for others. The appropriate asanas need to be chosen based on the individual’s requirements. A good teacher will be able to guide his/her student to the right posture and also get away with all your misconceptions on Yoga
