Exercises during pregnancy – How safe are they?

As is the case with the rest of the population, pregnant women also need regular exercising.

Regular exercises will leave your heart in great shape and your muscles healthy. Those who make this a habit are known to suffer less from the effects of pregnancy like morning sickness, constipation, back pain, leg pain etc. Those who exercise regularly are seen to be having much less problems during the later stages of pregnancy. They are also known to have shorter labor time. These women are known to lose the extra pounds gained during pregnancy in a very short time after labor. But any pregnant lady should discuss their exercise plans with their doctor and get their approval. In some cases, they may ask you to make some alterations to your exercise regimen.

If you had a habit of exercising regularly, then it would be better for you to stick to it with slight modifications as per the doctor’s advice. But if you are sedentary by nature, then it won’t be advisable to suddenly start vigorous exercising. If you start exercising after getting pregnant, go slow and start of with simple exercises. Never attempt to run a marathon or any thing similar!! It is advisable to do regular exercises routinely. Never try to over exercise after staying sedentary for a few days. Stick to a moderate exercise regimen and follow it diligently.

Some times you may be too tired during pregnancy and will not have the energy levels to do your routine exercises. Don’t make a big fuss about it. Accept it as a part of your normal pregnancy. You are supposed to gain some weight during pregnancy. Accept it and never try to reduce weight during pregnancy.

If you find any complications like vaginal bleeding, dizziness, high blood pressure, pain, breathing problems etc while exercising, you will have to stop exercising immediately and consult with your gynecologist. You may resume exercises only after you get clearance from your doctor.
