Barbie at 50 – Does she convey a positive or negative fashion statement?

Barbie has turned fifty years old.

She is still maintaining an amazing and beautiful body frame. There have been a lot of controversies about her thin frame and the bad influences it generates in women of all ages. Let us go through the pros and cons of some of these influences.

Before Barbie arrived on the scene in the 1950s, girls were destined to play only the mummy role. Barbie was the very first toy who gave them the opportunity to play an adult with options other than being a mommy. Barbie gave these girls new ideas about having a career, enjoy life through shopping and partying. Barbie forced these girls to think about opportunities outside marriage and motherhood. Hence the very initial suspicion about the bad influences of Barbie was that these toys might turn homely women in to independent career women. Many conservatives detested this idea.

Later there have been accusations against Barbie about its portrayal of a woman‘s shape. The impossible to achieve waist measurements were especially derided as a bad influence on women’s image. Detractors accuse Barbie as a major reason for the problems like anorexia, eating disorders etc exhibited by teenagers. This doll is blamed for influencing girls to place extreme importance on physical beauty so that this is adversely affecting their intellectual and emotional development. But kids are not going to take every thing they see in a toy that seriously. Most kids know that a toy is just a toy. They don’t compare the waist measurements with their own. The obesity epidemic existing in today’s world is another proof that women are not taking this Barbie image seriously. As such, Barbie has not adversely affected the majority of girls who played with her.

Another famous negative quote attribute to Barbie is “Math is hard. Let’s go shopping.” Women have started learning math and have overcome this stereotype. And there is some truth in this statement as a larger proportion of women hate math than men.

More than Barbie, it is the media’s portrayal of skinny models and actresses that could create stereotypical images of women.

    Interesting content.

Just wanted to share some information that may help busy professionals caught up with work and who have less time to maintain their nails. You can try out gel nails which are now becoming a hot favorite as they are natural looking even without nail tips and the best way for nail enhancement. Also, if you are allergic to those strong smelling chemicals which you can experience with acrylic nails, then you should use gel nails as these are odorless.

However, when you are planning on gel nail application, make sure you approach a nail salon or a nail artist who is well versed with gel nails and is properly trained and mastered in gel applications. This will save you from problems that can arise with improper gel nail applications.
