How do you compare running on a track and running on a treadmill? Logically and scientifically it should feel the same way and should provide the same results. But is that assumption correct?
When running on a track, you have to push your body upwards from the ground and go forward. It works pretty much the same way on a treadmill as well. But here you are getting the help of the treadmill and you do not need to spend as much energy as the track to go forward. The backward movement of the treadmill helps you to expend less energy. As you are given a specific speed to be followed by the treadmill, it gives you the feeling of less strain. The air conditioning in the gym could be another cause of difference between the two workouts.
Did you felt this phenomenon before? If this is true, then you would be getting a better work out by running on a track. Many people who practice run exclusively on the treadmill find it hard to complete the distance when run on actual tracks. This is one reason behind many coaches prohibiting runners from exclusively practicing their runs on treadmills.
Another questionable aspect about treadmills is the accuracy of time and distance calculations displayed by them. This question is applicable to the measurement of calories as well. Studies have shown that the readings displayed by treadmills vary by quite a significant amount. Different treadmills from the same manufacturer are found to have this problem with them. Moreover, they are not recalibrated after you buy the machines. An further reason for the wrong measurements could be the additional momentum generated by the runner’s body as it differs with the weight of the person.
A treadmill has its advantages in rainy or snowy weather or when you do not have proper tracks available. But if the weather conditions are suitable, then running on a track would be more beneficial as it would help you to burn more calories and improve your fitness.
You have the choice to increase the incline of the treadmill so as to increase the amount of energy expended. This could be helpful in reducing the difference between running on a track and running on a treadmill. There could be psychological advantages when you run on track. As there may be people watching your performance, you may be forced to run better than you would have done on a treadmill.
