Relationship Between Your Sugar Intake And The Amount Of Wrinkles On Your Skin

Author: Suvi Nadakuzhackal  //  Category: Skin Care

Is there a relationship between the amounts of sugar you consume and the number of wrinkles found on your skin (facial and others)? Yes. There is a relation between these two. If you have a soft tooth, you are bound to have more wrinkles on your skin. Those who consume more sugar are known to age faster than others. Many of us need our daily dose of soda, coffee, ice cream etc. They all contain a significant quantity of sugar in them. Some of these products offer alternatives with ’sugar free’ or with sugar substitutes in them. But most of us ignore the guidelines and stick to our daily intake of sugar and sugary products. The fear of gaining extra pounds does not bother us much. Now the fear of premature aging may force some of us from sticking to our sugar filled diet.

In our daily diet sugar is used in coffee and tea. Besides we consume sodas and chocolates, which contain a lot of sugar in them. Fruits, whole grain products and vegetables also turn in to sugar during digestion. If you consume these for a very long time, that is sure to affect the smoothness of your skin and your over all physical appearance.

How is sugar affecting wrinkles or aging?

A process known as glycation is the culprit here. This is a natural process happening in human body. During glycation, glucose derived from sugar in your blood stream combines with proteins and thus creates advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The name AGEs is really appropriate for it, as it is a major villain in human ageing process. AGEs affect the proteins collagen and elastin, which are responsible for the smoothness and healthiness of human skin. Any damages to collagen or elastin are going to result in new wrinkles and further damage to your skin.

Glycation affects your skin adversely in a secondary way as well. Human body has three major types of collagen in it. They are types I, II and III. Type I is the least resistant to aging due to its brittle nature. Type III is the best one against aging as this type of collagen is much stronger and resilient. Glycation converts these helpful type III collagens in to not so helpful type I collagens. So excessive sugar consumption acts as a double-edged sword and speeds up aging through glycation. Hence it would be a really smart move on any one’s part to reduce their sugar consumption so as to stay younger and healthier for a much longer period of time.

In addition to this AGEs adversely affect the antioxidants in human body and thus make it vulnerable to sickness. Antioxidants play an important role in protecting sun damage to human skin. Thus AGEs can affect sun damage to the skin and can eventually cause skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most prominent skin damage resulting from sun damage. Both of these, sun damage and skin cancer can result in premature aging.
