Alpha Hydroxy Acids - Good or Bad

Alpha Hydroxy Acids: Good or Bad?

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

People who are aware of the beauty tips and various products we usually use for our skin are getting more and more familiar with the term “alpha Hydroxy Acids”. Even some of the beauty companies out there in the market are putting alpha Hydroxy Acid content of their products as the centre piece in their marketing campaigns. Now the question is, what are alpha Hydroxy Acids?

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) are compounds which are derived out of sugar contained in some fruits and milk. Alpha Hydroxy Acids are known to have the ability to rejuvenate your skin. AHA cause the wrinkles to disappear and fixes the damage on your skin as a result of photoaging. Alpha Hydroxy Acids achieve this effect by exfoliating dead cells of your skin. This further causes the skin to grow new cells to replace the damaged cells. AHA also enhances elastin and collagen production on your body. Collagen and elastin are the compounds which helps in decreasing wrinkles on the skin.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids are now present in a lot of beauty products like eye creams, moisturizers, foundations, toners, cleansers, facial masks etc.

As is the case with any other beauty product, Alpha Hydroxy Acid products should be used minimally as it is not a fix all formula. Excessive or incorrect use of AHA may cause skin irritation. When AHA cures the photo aging damage on your skin, it makes your skin more vulnerable to future photo aging damage as well!! Too much use of AHA can cause pigment scarring also.

In short you need to be very careful while applying Alpha Hydroxy Acid products on your body. The right thing to do is restrict the number of AHA products to one or two among the bunch of stuff you use. It will be better to buy the rest of the products which do not have AHA. This will keep skin irritation away from you to some possible extent!!

It will be appropriate to choose your exfoliant and moisturizer to have AHA. Alpha Hydroxy Acids does the job of an exfoliant. Moisturizer is supposed to be absorbed on to your skin after you apply it. The absorption of AHA content of the beauty product by the skin is very important for it to work on your skin. So the use of cleansers with AHA is not sensible as they will be washed away even before AHA has a chance to work on your skin.

While using a beauty tip or product which contain Alpha Hydroxy Acid, you must use a sun screen always. This is especially true as AHA can increase your skins vulnerability to further damage from exposure to sun light. You have to apply lot of sun screen on your skin so as to save the skin from ill effects of sun burn, especially so in the skin part which is treated with the product containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids.

You need to use the products with the appropriate levels of AHA in it as excessive usage can cause harmful results. The percentage of content of AHA in any beauty product must be between 5% and 8%. The pH level should be three or four. If any of these is more, you will end up harming your skin more than rejuvenating it.

At an appropriate level, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, could be very good for your skin. If you do not use it in control, it may give you bad results as is the case of any good things in excess.
